This piece is a tribute to Francisco Toledo, the Oaxacan master whose work transformed the relationship between art, identity, and nature in Mexico. Made as a screen print with a technique that evokes relief printmaking, the image frames his face within the silhouette of a spiny nopal cactus, a symbol of resilience, rootedness, and territory. The fine, expressive linework recalls the aesthetics of traditional printmaking, while the monochrome choice of deep red heightens the portrait’s symbolic force: Toledo as seed and fruit of the land, a cactus heart that keeps beating in cultural memory.
